This photo essay documents Haiti’s poorest citizens who work the earth’s blackened branches in exchange for a bare subsistence. Charcoal is the main cooking fuel for all its citizens and serves as the only source of income for many rural families. The story explores the social, environmental, and economic effects of charcoal production in Haiti.
